Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a problem-oriented, short-term method of psychological treatment with a significant evidence-based foundation. CBT is now widely used with children and their families.
This course is a unique, multidisciplinary programme focussed on the alleviation of child and adolescent mental health problems through the dissemination of CBT skills and models and by the encouragement of an enquiring, collaborative and reflective practice.
This course is designed for professionals who already have experience of working with children and their families and who will be able to maintain this contact throughout the programme. It aims to build on existing skills and as such will be relevant to psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers and nurse practitioners.
The programme consists of academic teaching, skills workshops, supervised clinical practice of Cognitive Behavioural techniques, project work, written case studies and assessment of cognitive behavioural clinical practice through audio-visual tapes. There is s significant emphasis on the acquisition and development of clinical skills and the use of supervision and self-evaluation to monitor this process.
The course is part-time over two years. Attendance is for one day a week for two academic semesters in the first year. Participants will also need to have available at least one further day for work related to the programme - to see a range of suitable cases, to prepare reading and supervision material and research for project and written work. Participants are expected to arrange their own clinical cases within their work setting but there will be active supervision within small groups on a weekly basis.
The second year is dedicated to research methodology and the presentation of a thesis.

Mental Health problems can affect people of all ages, and it is estimated that one in five young people will suffer from mental health difficulties by the age of 18 years. Many people who work with children will encounter children who are suffering from a mental illness.
This is a new post graduate diploma course that will provide a comprehensive review of aspects of mental health and mental ill-health, and give information on promotion, detection and primary care intervention, for children and families with mental health difficulties. It will also cover the more formal mental health disorders such as ADHD, eating disorders and mood disorders, and it will provide information to the student on when and where to refer. Emphasis will be placed on how this knowledge can be practically applied in the students own workplace. This diploma course aims to provide people working with children with the specialized knowledge and skills to enable them to contribute to the mental health care of young people.
Applicants are expected to hold a primary undergraduate degree. Those without formal qualifications will need to demonstrate relevant experience and ability to study at a postgraduate level.
Graduates of the programme will be well positioned to pursue further study in Child and Adolescent mental health, for example, via one of the Masters courses in UCD, eg MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Children and Adolescents, MSc inVisual Therapy, MSc in group Analytic Psychotherapy or MSc in Psychotherapy (Systemic Family therapy)
The course is also recognized as a foundation year for the required four year study in child psychotherapy that is required by the Irish College of Psychotherapy for accreditation.
